For my Super Dad

I have been thinking about this card for a long time and I bought the WMS Man of the Hour set in May with the intention of making something special for dad back then.  The trouble is that thinking about my dad makes me feel so sad and it's severely affected my mojo.  He's 12,000 miles away but because of dementia he's even further away than that.  My poor mum can't manage any more after he had a fall and he's been in a nursing home for the past three months.  I would have loved to visit him through the summer but my own wee lad hasn't been well enough to travel as he has had yet another medication adjustment to try and control his epilepsy and he's been struggling to deal with it.  Hubby's been working away from home a lot so there was no question of travelling without him.

I wanted to make a card to sit on dad's bedside table so that anyone who didn't know him before would know just how wonderful he is.

The main inspiration for this card is the wonderful Darnell's NBUS Challenge # 5 challenge.  I've bought so much over the last few months - about time I used some of it.

I was inspired by this brilliant Mojo Monday Sketch 414.

And probably most importantly by this week's Muse Joan Bardee.  Joan's card reminded me of the sentiment I had been "thinking about" for dad and her message gave me just the kick in the pants I needed.

This photo of my dad taken on Anzac Day last year gave me a little more inspiration as well.  I tried to make my sentiment panel look like a medal of honour such as those he's wearing here.

Thanks for stopping by, especially if you take the time to leave a message,
Kate

  1. What a wonderful tribute post to your Dad, Kate ... and a fantastic card ... it captures perfectly everything you put into words here. Love that you styled the sentiment as a medal ... and that your card will be going on your Dad's bedside table for all to see. My heart goes out to you, your parents and family in coping with such a cruel and horrible disease. Keep your chin up ... Anita :)

  3. This is a wonderful card - I'm sorry your family's had a tough go of it lately - I hope things settle with your son and also with your dad. It certainly is terrible to 'lose' someone in this way. This card is a fitting tribute to the man you knew! Great combination of these challenges - so glad you joined us at Muse this week!

  8. Your tribute to your wonderful Dad really touched my heart! I took a moment to pray for you and your Mom and Dad and just wanted to let you know. I know how difficult it is to live far away from your parents ... wanting to be there to help and encourage them and spare them from difficulties. I feel sure that your Mom will also be encouraged by this heartfelt creation you've made for your Dad.

  11. This was really heart-breaking to read, Kate. I'm sorry that your father has been taken away from you by dementia. Your card and tribute to him are beautiful. He sounds like a wonderful man. If I may be so bold, I want to say that he would rather you were happy knowing you were blessed to have him as a father and know his love, than be depressed about how far away he is both physically and mentally.

I recently had a similar conversation with a couple of friends who were crying because they missed their fathers so much (they have passed several years ago). I understood their grief, but I said how blessed they were to have fathers to grieve for, as I did not have that blessing in my life. I didn't say it to be mean or jealous, but just as how life sometimes works for people. One of them said, "I don't know. Sometimes I think you are the lucky one because you never knew an amazing father's love so you don't miss it." I get that, but, really? When is it ever better to be unloved than to be loved? You know? Or am I crazy? Don't answer that, ha!

Anyway, big hugs to you as you struggle with what's happening to your father and I hope your son has gotten sorted with his meds and is doing well! I didn't mean to write a novel, geesh! Thank you so much for playing in my NBUS Challenge #5! Thank you, too, for understanding and forgiving me for being so tardy in getting here! Hugs, Darnell

    1. I am indeed lucky to have had such a wonderful dad. I am blessed just to have had him in my life let alone as my dad - I can't tell you how proud I am of him. It just gets me down a little that he should exit life in this way, when he has been such an exemplary, good person, but who said life was meant to be fair eh !!!
